The Final Step

Leading someone to Christ

There is not a perfectly canned process for someone coming to Christ. We need to spend time with people and ensure they understand their personal need for salvation, then help them to understand that salvation can only come through Jesus Christ and his sacrifice on the cross, then finally lead them through an understanding that when we trust in Christ’s death and resurrection we enter into his death for reconciliation of our sins and we enter into his resurrection for life and our righteousness.

A great model for leading someone through this process is called the “Romans Road”, I have outlined this below:

The Romans Road

In the Bible, the scriptures read...

Not one of us is righteous. We are all sinners.

We all have sin in our lives and God does not tolerate sin. With sin in our lives, we are lost - alienated from God. This leaves us feeling hopeless, sad, and afraid.

God sent his Son to us while we were still sinners. We are not saved by our own goodness but by the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

There is a payment, or a wage, for sin and the payment for sin is death. Because we are sinners, we are condemned to death. But God loves us so much that He sent His Son into the world to die for us on the cross. He was not guilty of sin but carried the weight of our sin to the cross and satisfied the demand of the law toward sin for those who believe.

We must admit that we are sinners, ask God for forgiveness of our sins, and repent. If we believe that Jesus died for us and rose from the dead and we confess it with our mouths and believe it in our hearts, then we are saved! When sins are forgiven, there is no more reason for fear, sadness, and hopelessness. We are filled with joy and hope!

Whosoever is YOU! If you realize that you are a sinner and you call upon the name of the Lord, you shall be saved.

After someone comes to a full understanding of these truths as outlined in God’s word, they can then make the eternal decision to step in Faith into Jesus Christ for reconciliation, for salvation, for life.  You can offer to lead them in prayer using a simple prayer like the one below or whatever you feel is on your heart to pray together.

Lord Jesus, I need you. Thank you for dying on the cross for the forgiveness of my sins. Thank you for offering me Your life. I now ask You to come into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Take control of my life and make me into the new creation You want me to be. I now thank You for coming into my heart and giving me eternal life.

After you pray together, share with them the assurance of their salvation based on the promises of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.

We have been accepted by God through Christ, and we have redemption and forgiveness. We no longer need to hope and pray for these truths we now have them!

Eph 1:6  to the praise of the glory of His grace, in which He has made us accepted in the One having been loved.

Eph 1:7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace,

We are sealed by the promise of God’s word and by the Holy Spirit for our redemption!

Eph 1:13  in whom also you, hearing the Word of Truth, the gospel of our salvation, in whom also believing, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Eph 1:14  who is the earnest of our inheritance, to the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

It is by God’s grace we are now saved! We no longer hope that we may be saved we know we are!

Eph 2:8  For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God,

Eph 2:9  not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Lastly I would ensure they know that they are now part of God’s family and they have a new identity, that of a Child of God. They are now a new creation in Christ and part of the Body of Christ. They now have a whole new family of brothers and sisters in Christ who care for them and welcome them with love, patience, understanding and encouragement.
